10 Movies That Make You Want to Dance

If your past few weeks have been anything like ours, you may be sitting inside a lot more than you’re used to. We’ve taken to virtual yoga classes, walking laps from the bedroom to the fridge, and living room dance breaks to get moving. Dancing has been an especially great way to release those feel-good endorphins that make the world seem a little less crazy for a moment.

As proponents of #LovePeaceGreatFilm, here are 10 great films that are worth a watch and will make you wanna dance. Be sure you get to our #1, because we’ve got a fun Instagram challenge that goes along with it. More ways to fill the time at home – YAY!

10. The Mask (1994)

Rent on Amazon, YouTube Movies or iTunes

This may not be an obvious choice, but it is a “smokin” one. Jim Carrey doesn’t just bring his famous expressions to this 90s comedy – he also brings his dance moves. From tangoing with Cameron Diaz at the Coco Bongo to his Cuban Pete scene in the street, there are plenty of moments you’ll want to dance along. Even the police get in on the conga line.

9. Stomp the Yard (2007)

Rent on Amazon, YouTube Movies or iTunes

Okay, so Stomp the Yard isn’t the greatest film, but it excelled at introducing moviegoers to the world of collegiate stepping infused with street dance to create unforgettable moments on the big screen. Stomp the Yard offers some seriously impressive combinations that you’ll be dying to try after watching.

8. Footloose (1984)

Time to kick off your Sunday shoes. Although, we doubt you’re even wearing shoes these days. Kevin Bacon, 80s jeans and glitter – what more do you need to forget the world and indulge in some much-needed foot shufflin’?

7. Save the Last Dance (2001)

Rent on Amazon, YouTube Movies or iTunes

Save the Last Dance will give you all the feels. Yes, it has its downs (kinda like life at the moment), but the highs are high (and oh-so-sweet)! The combo of dance, music, romance and on-screen chemistry makes this the perfect teen movie to get you swooning and moving.

6. Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Stream on Starz | Rent on YouTube Movies or iTunes

The only fever we’re here for is Saturday Night Fever. This 70s classic is a groovy trip back in time, but it’s not just the music and disco moves that will capture your heart. John Travolta gives a star performance that earned him an Oscar nomination, and the dramatic storyline will surely keep you captivated. All we know is, “you should be dancin’, yeah” after watching this one.

5. Burlesque (2010)

Stream on Netflix or Starz | Rent on Amazon, YouTube Movies or iTunes

Cher telling us, “You gotta make me believe that you belong on that stage, that it’s yours and nobody can take it from you!” is all the inspiration we really need in our lives right now. Sure, this film falls into that “so-bad-it’s-good” category, but it is so worth the watch. You’ll be feeling like a diva in no time.

4. West Side Story (1961)

Stream on DirecTV or Starz | Rent on Amazon, Youtube Movies or iTunes

We are already fastening our seat belts for the upcoming film remake by Steven Spielberg. For now, it’s a great time to rewatch the original and practice the mambo in your living room. In case you need more convincing, we should also mention this iconic classic won ten Oscars – yes TEN – so it is obviously a must-see.

3. Step Up (2006)

Stream on Hulu or SHO | Rent on Amazon, Youtube Movies or iTunes

Based on Rotten Tomatoes data, Step Up may not be critically acclaimed (20% critics score), BUT it is a crowd favorite (83% audience score) – and for good reason. This movie packs in high-energy choreography, a stellar soundtrack, and a magical spark between the two leads (who ended up getting married IRL, btw). Channing Tatum’s smooth moves are exactly what we need in these difficult times.

2. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Stream on DirecTV | Rent on Amazon, Youtube Movies or iTunes

This one made the list for obvious reasons. Forget the world for a bit and “have the time of your life” while you watch this absolute classic. Just be careful when you practice that lift with your quarantine buddy!

1. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Stream on Starz | Rent on Amazon, Youtube Movies or iTunes

This epic film is much more crime and dialogue than it is dance, but John Travolta and Uma Thurman’s show-stealing dance scene is why this one tops the list. We’d love to see you recreate their moves over on Instagram! Simply turn on “You Can Never Tell” by Chuck Berry and do your best twist. Share it to your IG Feed or Stories, tag @rooftopcinemaclub and hashtag #LovePeaceGreatFilm. We’ll share our favorites and may even throw in some free tickets for the best Mia or Vincent!
