Rooftop Recommends: Films to See This Thanksgiving
Gobble, Gobble, Rooftop Fam!
Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most popular movie-going weekends of the year. While our rooftops are dark as we celebrate the holidays, there are plenty of amazing films to check out until we’re back in action!
Whether you’re on our rooftops or sitting in a seat at your local multiplex, we encourage you to, always, WATCH MORE MOVIES! And here are some carefully curated titles we highly recommend…
GREEN BOOK
Three Reasons to Watch:
- Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali deliver two of the finest performances of the year, and will surely see some awards love come January
- The film is directed by Peter Farrelly, one half of the writing/directing duo that gave us Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There’s Something About Mary. And he’s just as deft at drama
- Currently at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is receiving near universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike
CREED II
Three Reasons to Watch:
- The original Creed defied expectations when it was released, receiving critical and commercial acclaim, and securing an Academy Award nomination for Sylvester Stallone – and what’s a Rocky film without a sequel?
- Michael B. Jordan. Period. After his standout role in Black Panther and the HBO miniseries Fahrenheit 451, it’s really difficult imagining him not being able to do anything with the same level of bad ass authenticity
- Dolph Lundgren reprises his role as Ivan Drago from Rocky IV, and the word on the street is that he is a standout in the film, bringing a level of nuance and pathos to the role that he was not allowed in the original fourth installment
THE FAVOURITE
Three Reasons to Watch:
- It’s the latest film from Greek provocateur, Yorgos Lanthimos, the man behind the controversial Dogtooth, the darkly inventive The Lobster, and the indescribable The Killing of a Sacred Deer
- It stars the incredible British actress, Olivia Colman, who is receiving raves for her performance; Academy Award winner Emma Stone (La La Land); and Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardner)
- Currently at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, it continues to be one of the best reviewed pictures of the year
BOY ERASED
Three Reasons to Watch:
- The film boasts one of the best ensemble casts of the year including Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges, Academy Award winners Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman, pop singer Troye Sivan, and filmmaker Xavier Dolan
- It’s the second feature film directed by actor Joel Edgerton, whose previous film, The Gift, was a critical and commercial success; Edgerton also co-stars in the film as the leader of the Love In Action organization
- Based on a true story, the film chronicles one boy’s experience in a gay conversion program and adds an honest and low-key perspective on a controversial topic that has fascinated millions of people
OVERLORD
Three Reasons to Watch:
- Mainstream, Hard-R horror films that receive a wide release are a rare thing, particularly one given the budget and marketing push as Overlord, which automatically piques the interest
- It’s from the creative forces at J.J. Abram’s Bad Robot, and was originally rumored to be a new installment in the Cloverfield universe, before that rumor was eventually debunked
- The film features a talented young cast including Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn), Jovan Adepo (a standout in Denzel Washington’s Fences), and Iain De Caestecker (Leo Fitz on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
