Programmer’s Picks: November in Los Angeles
LOVE IS IN THE AIR! At least – it is on our Hollywood rooftop as we celebrate ‘romance’ for November. We’ve got an entire month of classics designed to make your significant other swoon in your arms…and some less heart-soaked classics for the occasional breather. We’re also trying our hand at our first TRIPLE FEATURE – Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy. As excited as we are about ALL of our November titles, here are the three that really have us singing.

Never Been Kissed (1999)
Director: Raja Gosnell
Cast: Drew Barrymore, David Arquette, Michael Vartan, and Molly Shannon
The year 1999 was BIG for high school set comedies. While 10 Things I Hate About You, American Pie, and She’s All That are the ones people tend to talk about most, we shouldn’t forget the equally delightful, Never Been Kissed, which went a long way into turning Drew Barrymore BACK into a household name. It was a classic setup executed with deft comedic precision, thanks to some hilarious supporting turns from David Arquette, Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, and more. We’re excited to reintroduce this film back into the popular lexicon and hopefully help give it the second life it deserves.

Jerry Maguire (1996)
Director: Cameron Crowe
Cast: Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding, Jr.
“Show me the money!”
“Help me help you.”
“You complete me.”
It’s impossible to choose just one line to love fromJerry Maguire, a film that was GIGANTIC when it was released in 1996 but has settled into this – “Oh yeah, I remember that.” – phase of its cinematic life. Remember that adorable little kid who grew up to be…well…less adorable? Remember Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s insane Oscar acceptance speech? Well – this is the film that gave us all that. It’s a love story…and a comedy…and Tom Cruise at the pentacle of his charm and swagger. It’s endlessly entertaining and hasn’t lost a step throughout the year. It also introduces us to Renee Zellweger, for better or worse.

Richard Linklater’s BEFORE Trilogy (1995-2013)
Director: Richard Linklater
Cast: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy
Not one…not two…but three of the greatest romance films ever made, each one written by the same people, starring the same people, and featuring one of the most endearing and realistic relationships ever depicted on screen. It all started in 1995 with Before Sunrise, when writer/director Richard Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, two strangers who become so much more. It continued in 2004 with Before Sunset, and concluded in 2013 with Before Midnight. We couldn’t be happier to be presenting all three films on our rooftop as we celebrate romance in November in Hollywood. You can come for one film – or stay for all three! We’ve got everything you need to make your stay comfortable and memorable. And it’s the perfect chance to expose your friends to a trilogy they might never have seen. Come and do the good work of cinema!
