Awesome August Movies: Top Flick Picks in San Diego in August

Summer’s almost over, but the show must go on! We’re kicking off the month of August with an amazing mix of movies and to celebrate, we’re sharing some of our fave films screening on our rooftop this month!

Coming to America (1988)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because when you think of garbage, you think of Akeem! A twist on the classic rags to riches, Prince Akeem goes from riches to rags as he travels from the beautiful nation of Zamunda to a colorful neighborhood in Queens to find a bride (Remember, this was before Tinder, dating was hard in the 80s!) So have someone cover your shift at McDowell’s and join us for this classic comedy. Trust us, Eddie Murphy will have you rolling on our roof laughing.

Find a bride on August 23rd.

No journey is too great when one finds what he seeks.” – Akeem

Zoolander (2001)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because you still can’t figure out …why male models. We know there’s a stereotype that male models don’t really contribute much to our society, but Zoolander totally proves the stereotype wrong. We mean, Derek not only has time to serve some fierce looks but also manages to save the world AND help kids who can’t read good learn to read good! So grab your Orange Mocha Frappuccino and join us on the roof for the movie that inspired our go-to-selfie face!

Relax! on August 18th.

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.”  – Derek Zoolander

Rocky (1993)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because as soon as you read “Rocky” the theme song got stuck in your head. Join us as we cheer on the ultimate underdog who’s way more motivated that we’ll ever be. Seriously, have you ever taken shots of raw eggs? No thanks, we’ll stick to a nice bowl of cereal. So run up some stairs, and join us on the rooftop we celebrate the Italian Stallion!

Defy all odds on August 22nd.

Black Panther (2018)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because we must protect Wakanda at all costs. If you haven’t seen the biggest movie of the year because you’re ‘not into comics’, you’re missing out. Black Panther’s got everything you could want – strong fierce women, heartwarming family moments, action-packed chase scenes, and most importantly, a bangin’ soundtrack from King Kendrick Lamar. What more could you ask for?

All hail the true king on August 28th.

Labyrinth (1986)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because you need an excuse to admire the Goblin King in tights (heart-eyed emoji!). The last feature-length film by Jim Henson, features all of our favorites – David Bowie, memorable music, puppets, and temporarily ditching our annoying younger siblings. Come enjoy all the crazy creatures and sing along to some the catchiest songs of all time.

Solve the labyrinth on August 17th.

Point Break (1986)

Why You Should Watch It:

Because summer’s coming to an end, and you’re itchin’ to catch some waves (despite not knowing how to surf). The female-directed, feature-length film features one off our fave actors (we’re total Swayze stans here at rooftop) who goes onto create some of the best surf scenes in the history of cinema. It also features some of the creepiest masks in the history of all cinema, but we get it. If you’re going to go around robbing banks, function > fashion.

Hang Loose on August 30th.
